Audio: The Abyssinians – Santa Massaganna

Posted on November 17, 2008 by Sleezy Trees

One of my favorite reggae cuts of all time comes from a group called The Abyssinians. Now if you’re a reggae head – this is pretty standard stuff, and easily one of the must have 7″ staples in the collectsh of any self-respecting roots reggae head.

The song is called: Santa Massagana and the year is 1976.

Three vocalists, singing in harmony. Heavy into the Rastafarian movement, the Abyssinians deliver a part of this in the sacred Ethiopian language of Amharic. One of the tenets of Rastafarianism is the belief that the last Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie, was a direct descendent of God. Speaking the Ethiopian language is meant as a tribute to both King Selassie and God himself.
