Moe Pope + Rain = “Life After God”

Posted on July 21, 2010 by Chris Faraone

Print

Rain had one fuck of a task on his hands. The relatively unknown Boston producer was tapped by lyrically revered Project Move veteran Moe Pope to compose the follow-up to the latter’s 2008 victory Megaphone, which was slow to burn but finally earned its due rep as a distinguished contemporary rap artifact.

Fortunately, Rain aced the assignment by rising above beatmaker status and diligently synthesizing boom-bap with rich organic syrup to spoon atop Moe’s tragic essays. Life After God is a mostly melancholy meditation, since Moe was both depressed and polluted through much of the writing process. But his rhymes — all of which are “misfit in the room of hoes that’s materialistic” — are nonetheless enlightened nuggets that sparkle beneath the variegated highlights of Rain’s drizzle. The post-Motown “City Lights” with Edo G throws back, “Bullitt” pushes forward, and the piano play on “Bang Bang” is (and I hate this adjective) timeless.

At its best, Life After God finds Moe meeting Reks on “Foolish” (which is anything but) and spitting like a BP-sponsored porn star on two versions of “Rock Me.” Moe don’t preach, but he sure does know how to communicate.

New Reflection Eternal Video: Ballad of the Black Gold

Posted on July 20, 2010 by Chris Faraone

In my opinion this is the most impressive joint on Hi-Tek and Talib Kweli’s recently released Revolutions Per Minute (REVIEW HERE). Glad to see they gave it the proper treatment in the wake of the BP oil spill (not to mention the many oil-driven conflicts and quagmires that the United States is currently tangled up in). Kweli might not be the same sort of revolutionary that he once was, but at least he still finds room for cuts like this on his projects. Content aside, too, this is one hell of a banger.

Dam Funk x MC Eiht – Hood Pass Intact

Posted on July 20, 2010 by Martín Caballero

Dam Funk’s appearance at Great Scott in Allston on a cold ass night in March was one of the best shows to come through the Bean thus far this year (shouts to @PBR_Boston). He’ll be back on the scene with a 12″ EP this summer via Stones Throw, of which this song, featuring the original “Mr. I’m So JEEEAHHH” MC Eiht, is the title track. It already appeared on his 2009 LP Toeachizown, but it sounds even better when played in warm weather.

Mayer Hawthorne – You’re Easy Lovin’ Ain’t Pleasin’ Nothin’ [Video]

Posted on July 20, 2010 by Martín Caballero

The other day Sleezy Trees berated me for contributing nothing to JTTS besides posting videos. The fact is my low attention span and lowly Internet powers render my blogging abilities limited at best; that says more about the truly one-in-a-million Internet goon status of Sleezy Trees than it does about my own average talents. On top of all that, I’m suspicious that nobody reads this blog besides Wite and Chris Faraone.

In any case, here’s another video. Mayer Hawthorne remakes 2Pac’s “I Get Around” as retro doo-wop, with a bunch of American Apparel model-hopefuls replacing the Pac’s 90’s skeezers.

Enjoy, until the next Sleezy Trees post.

The Dude Who Wrote The Vocoder Book Has A New Blog

Posted on July 19, 2010 by Chris Faraone

el-tompkins

His name is Dave Tompkins, and he’s just about the best damn music writer alive. He’s also Paul C’s biographer (if you don’t know – go to school). Check it out – especially if you’re tired of lame old rap blogs like this one.

Read a recent interview with Tompkins HERE

El Gant featuring Bekay & DeeJay Element – “You Ain’t This”

Posted on July 18, 2010 by Chris Faraone

youaintthisbanner

Glad to see that El Gant is still ripping. Dude is one of the few dope freestyle MCs who can write a great song – in fact his 2001 joint It’s Over is one of my favorite albums of the era (which is a big statement). Pretty sure he came out of the SUNY-Albany scene, which, if I remember correctly, yielded quite a few cats who were much more into rapping than attending class. Word to hip-hop.

Posted on July 17, 2010 by Chris Faraone

chillathejuggernautmixe

It’s the Juggernaut, bitch!

Definitely one of the toughest MCs kicking out of Boston right now.

And dude has a fresh original name, too, which is fucking rare these days (with Blacastan being the obvious exception)

Posted on July 16, 2010 by Martín Caballero

N.A.S.A. had one of the better albums of last year I thought…this video is way late, not one of my favorite songs but well put-together. All the art is by Brazilian artist Calma (more art below).
