esoteric used to be good. that protocal single was ill. he had a couple of other singles that were decent but nowadays he’s trash. 7L is a good deejay and producer. Slain, termanology, jaysaun, edo, akro, mr.lif, d.auguste, paw dukes k.t., m-slash,krumbsnatcha, the defencemen,and kthei, are all better.
I’ll stay out of this other than to say that I think it’s a big deal that Eso is up for Best Artist instead of just being in the hip-hop categories.
Other than that – I think the lesson to be learned here is that doing anything for the music scene in Boston – whether it be writing, DJing, show promoting, or throwing an award show – is a thankless task.
Dane and Lyrical – if you’re listening – this is your chance to end the next MIC Awards before you put too much work in. I hope it happens – will be fun if it does – but you’ll get nothing but scorn for it. That’s for sure.

Yes Miles is a mainstream artist Lisa but he is Boston.. Your nominations seems a little sketchy if you ask me, and yes i think you guys nominations are based on your skin tone and not your work. Its about time someone stands for something in Boston..
Ive been a fan of both Masspike and the Bellos for years and you guys both deserve noms, I just hope something great comes from this. Masspike Miles ft Lisa Bello sounds like a great collaboration but whos to say that would ever happen..? But anywho I agree with Miles 100% that the BMA’s are racist pricks, and they have been for years!! Its just sad you guys are in the middle of it..
Adam I totally agree…….I believe that he has validity in his overall point but using us as the focus point is dumb…there is a bigger point and it gets lost when you keep focusing on us and not the bigger picture which is the awards themselves…
So, are you saying that being a mainstream artist is a fault and makes someone undeserving or not eligible for a nom because it is my understanding that the opposite should be the case. You seem to be belittling the BMAs and if you feel that they are not worthy of mainstream artists’ attention than what does that say about you and your broher being nominated for six awards. Also if you have such a non-chalant attitude toward this honor than maybe you should step aside and allow for artists with more respect to assume your place. I believe that the BMAs is a chance for artists from boston to get the light they so desperately need and deserve because lets face it Boston artists have a difficult time being recognized for their accomplishments. This in part is because of issues like this where hard working, talented people are being overlooked and underrated by the poeple who should be giving them a helping hand. The Boston music community should work together to showcase our talent so we can show the world that Boston can be a hot spot for the music industry again, like it once was. The only way this can happen is if we put aside our differences and stop judging based on stereotypes because whether people like it or not hip hop and the urban culture is a large part of music today and that’s not going to change. It is probably true that the people coordinating the BMAs do not have a good grasp on what is happening in the urban community and this is an issue that needs to be addressed because you cannot ignore a large group of people because they are different and you are not open to acceptance. This is not only a black/white issue, it is the voice of the urban community as a whole that is being suppressed which needs to be heard, regardless of race.
The awards arent all about race. Even if they def are bias. Like evverything else in this world. If it had anything to do with race an Italian MC from Lynn who has done more shows in the last 2 years than any band, or rapper for that matter, and I’ve seen in every Boston newspaper numerous times, would have atleast got a nomination. Evrryone knows who I’m talking bout since he has been on this site alot. How come Mass Pike complains and this kid isn’t complaining? At the end of the day people know who the hardest workers are. And these award shows cause unneeded whining and arguing over nuthin.
Let me take this time to remind you that Lyrical won album of the year at his own award show in 2006.

I don’t agree with Miles on much but he is right here. But there is no standard for artists. Miles to me seems to be at the top of r&b game in Boston but his name still isn’t everywhere and no matter what award show is in Boston their hiphop nominees SUCK. Recognizing grind is one thing but there are artists with grind and talent that deserve the nomination over a lot of these cats.
Eso is dope…..but I honestly havent check for a record of his in years.
As much as I agree theres a problem with the whole nom process, I don’t think everytime there is an issue we can blame it on people being white. Music doesn’t have a racial divide, a white guy can sing R&B just like a black guy can sing rock and it is possible to fall in multiple categories. I think the real problem hear is that whoever is in charge doesnt seem to be able to distinguish the difference between genres. If someone is sorta pop/R&B but mainly pop they really shouldn’t be in the R&B category. But that shouldn’t be taken out on the artist for where they were nominated, thats the committees fault.
Also, seriously Boston is never going to be taken seriously when no one can help eachother out. Theres room in the industry for more than 1 artist from the city. Theres so many artist from NYC,LA,Chi-town but then when you look round here its like a constant flow of artist putting artist down. Like if your a female R&B singer you gotta hold back all other female R&B singers in the bean insteada throwin a damn good show together. BMA’s give a platform to the whole city and theres so much talent around here, but when someone makes it its like they never come back to bring anyone else with em.
In general i agree with Masspike Miles proclamations of the BMA’S as bullshit. Over the years the Boston Music Awards has been a little bit suspect in how and who they choose for nominees and winners. However i think its sort of unprofessional to call out anybody who was nominated. I mean it just makes you sound like a hater!! I dont think esoteric is such a great mc. Maybe he shouldnt have been nominated. Plenty of boston rappers better than him (Reks, singapore kane, frankie wainwright, smoke bulga, etc). But at the same time he was nominated. What else can he do but show up and hope to win? It aint his fault he’s a white rapper from Boston. Boston been pushin for the great white hope since Larry Bird. And how can you ask what Big Shug has done for Boston??? First of all he is a veteran from a whole different era. You prolly were in diapers when he was goin outta town and slappin cats in the name of reppin Boston. Plus he put on singapore kane. A dope rapper from BOSTON ( not lawrence or lynn or surrounding communities). He also had the dopest boston anthem i’ve heard thus far (”my boston” ft. singapore kane and termanology prod by dj premier). I dont know about the Bellos. The brother or sister so i wont speak on them. But Masspike needs a reality check. What have you done for boston? And who really knows you outside of boston? Just stick to the music son and one day maybe you’ll get a nod (but dont hold your breathe though)!!!!

I don’t know much about the BMA choice process but maybe if they reached out on you they pick people it would clear up things. NKOTB didn win anything? What is local and mainstream? because you come from a town the award show is in makes it local? Who is mainstream? Masspik i never seen an album our tour with his name on it and i’m from Massachusetts. To me mainstream is who you hear on most radio stations and tv, local is you might just hear on something like college radio. The way people bash these award shows is silly, just dont participate. I actually went to two of the MIC award shows and thought they were dope. Actually compared to them all I thought was the MIC ones were by far the best. Some of the winners and nominees from the mic I didn’t know I searched online and ended up appreciating. I heard this dude complains about everything and last album he did was preteens. P.S. Good and suck is a matter of opinions. Esoteric has a huge following, and after searching Lisa Bello on myspace I think she is very talented

For the most part I agree. I think Louie and Lisa work superhard and have a strong presence on the scene so their nominations are deserved. But I think a lot of mediocre bordering on wack artists got nominated (or won) while a lot of artists with much more talent got overlooked. Whether that’s because of race, politics, “who you know”, lack of promotion on the artists’ part, I don’t know, but it definitely doesn’t reflect well on the BMAs, in my opinion. I think artists have to do everything possible to make their presence known in the local scene so they can’t be overlooked next time. Promote yourself, perform as often as possible, make connections OUTSIDE your immediate circle, etc. Artists do bear some of the responsibility for being overlooked. But the BMAs need to reconsider their selection process because clearly what they’re doing now isn’t working.
Wow. Someone just forwarded this to me so I thought I’d respond. I took over this awards show in 2003 and we have tried to make it better every year. We volunteer our time to run it and all of the proceeds go to Music Drives Us, a non-profit that puts money back into local music programs for kids. We seek help from the entire community to make sure it is inclusive and represents all genres. This year, we expanded the nominating committee to include 180 people from all genres and all areas of the music business in town – radio, print, online, producers, managers, studios, etc. And we’ll work hard to expand it next year and try to continue to make it better. We don’t sit in a room and decide who gets nominated or who wins these awards – we seek input and advice from the community and those folks nominate and vote.
I have learned in our 6 years of doing this that you can not make everyone happy, but we try hard to. If you, or anyone else that has commented here, have suggestions on who we can include in our nominating process that would better represent the hip-hop/R&B genres, please email me directly at crives@trpmarketing.com and I’ll be happy to reach out to them and include them in the process.
I’ve been called a lot of things in the last 6 years, but “racist” crosses a pretty big line. If you want to help make it better, then step up. But calling anyone a racist online is not the way to solve problems or advance your career.

Wow. Lisa grinded her ass off for that award and deserves it, don’t hate on her just cuz you havent been paying attention. I’ve seen her put in alot more work than most other people in this scene.
That being said, Chip Rives – BMA’s are WAY out of touch in the hiphop category. As far as I can tell its widely considered a joke and you shouldnt be surprised to see this type of criticism. Find some other help picking nominees in these categories if you want to be taken seriously in the future.

ok, once and for all: the bellos don’t get so much attention just because they are white. it’s because of who they know. malik williams is a close family friend, and he plays with their band. he is on the committee for the boston music awards…you can see the connection there. the bellos don’t get the attention just because they are white. that is too simplistic. they are white doing traditionally black music. although general opinion is that they sing pop and aren’t very good at “r&b.” think teena marie, elvis presley. white people have been trying to appropriate black music for years. that’s why they’re so popular. because white crowds are much more into white people trying to do black music than they are white people doing white music or black people doing black music. it’s an image thing. as for the bma’s, they were an online popularity vote. whoever has the most friends on facebook gets the most votes. it’s not fair, and it’s not reflective of actual talent. as someone who loves music, i hope we can stop over-hyping certain singers. if a black woman sang like lisa bello, she’d just be another mediocre singer. after seeing her live three times, i can tell you she is off pitch in every song (usually flat, occassionally sharp), her originals are pop, not R&B, and her vocals are harsh and affected (like teena marie)- a white person just trying too hard to sound black. i can’t wait for real r&b (not pop) to make a come back.
while we’re on the topic of lisa bello (LOL), if you need proof she’s trying way too hard, this is her tag line phrase on her profiles: “Nine out of ten black people agree that this white chick can sing. The tenth one is tone deaf.” That’s so corny! relax and sing lisa, stop trying so hard. it’s a racial stereotype that black people know who can sing and who can’t. it’s just like saying black people can play basketball and like fried chicken. why not just say “people think i can sing.” oh wait, that would be conceited, wouldn’t it?? get over yourself.
