Wow. Hip Hop Really Is Dead. R.I.P. Technics 1200’s?

Posted on November 28, 2009 by Sleezy Trees

Several websites are reporting that production on Technic 1200s + 1210s will cease in February.

I find this very difficult to believe.. I’m getting that same queasy feeling I got when I heard that Obama had won the presidency, or when Michael Jackson had died.. or when I read that Faraone is a fan of Wale..

This particular turntable was a STAPLE of hip hop culture. Next thing you know Vibe magazine will shut down or Fat Beats will go out of business..

this is, from what I can tell, just a rumor. Panasonic has reorganized itself in the last few years and made many acquisitions, which has left the 1200 and the Technics brand in complete stasis. No DJs are buying decks anymore, they buying digital controllers for the ITCH or Abelton shit. If these rumors are true, I will tear a bit.

They’re only discontinuing the mk5 (fancy blue strobes, switchable pitch from ±8 to ±16). The mk2 is still in production.

my 2 cents is i’ve never known a DJ to buy a brand new pair of techs. There are so many used ones floating around. The fact that they last forever may be what shoots them in the foot as far as sales.
