How a soul sample evolves from a Mr. Lif banger to a hit Jay-Z record and beyond…
Posted on November 14, 2009 by Chris Faraone
It all started with a sweet old soul grab from The Moments‘ “Love on a Two Way Street.” It was a mere kernel, but man was there potential…
In time, Florida’s Asamov found the dusty vinyl, performed surgery, and had Boston’s Mr. Lif get up on it. One of the Perceptionist’s dopest verses ever, for sure….
Not surprisingly, since cats get jacked regularly, Jay-Z (along with producer Al Shux) co-opted the Asamov joint – and asked Alicia Keys for her blessing to ensure that legions of morons would defend the establishment when underground cats came crying foul…
Finally – since no national single should go un-localized – Mass producer the Arcitype recruited ViceVersah and some other cats to rip a “Bay State of Mind” version. Naturally, the shit is burning up on YouTube…
That’s it…at least for now…

i hear ya but i think your exaggerating the signifigance here. this shit happens all the time. on porpuse or by accident. we’ll never know.
This happens all the time – cut throat art of sampling & jackin. Shit’s happened to me a few times.
great post dude
I got bunch of records that have already been used before. Sometimes I won’t touch it. but a lot of times i will cuz i bought the record so im gonna use it. I think people get pissed when the shit blows up like this did. but they both sound different in my opinion
That Supa Dynamite is a classic down here in FLA. Chicks dance to that shit at the club!
Yeah that sucks when you have a song that you sampled first and then someone else uses it and it blows up.
I think Defari had a song with the same sample also.
I think things like this are bound to happen with any record. But at least it’s better than the remake of songs. I hate how the lack of originality these days has people resorting to ripping apart and ruining some very classic tracks. If I hear “You Spin My Head Round” one more time I’m going to slice through someone’s neck with a fork.
yeah.. i sincerely doubt that it was on purpose.. but wtf do i know.
also bay state of mind = the wackest idea ever. no better than jacking the beat.
co-sign treez. i hate the jay-z and boston versions of this song
I went to school with Al Shux that producer Empire State of Mind over here in the UK… Could ask him about the track if you want?

As soon I heard the song I was trying to tell people but no one seems to care…but that’s the industry right now. On the other hand Alicia Keys kills it and the song is pretty dope so I guess it could have been worse the way they recycle everything now. Also the first I knew to use this was Hybrid H for a fresh song called “clockwise” released in ‘04.
