Singapore Kane- Living Militant (Brick) (digital-only)
Rappers are officially running out of names. Gone are the days where a simple moniker like Rob Base or Young MC would suffice. These days we have P.O.S., Vordul Mega and Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em, aliases that sound like nicknames for shitty cars or G.I. Joe villains. I’m not too crazy about Singapore Kane (as a name) either, name-wise; one-part Asian banking capital, one-part Big Daddy Kane, all kinda strange. But hey, the guy can rap. The Boston-based MC drops his digital-only album Living Militant today on Brick Records, backed by the imposing presence of Big Shug and some top-notch producers (Moss, Illmind). There’s nothing out of left-field here; just straight-up lyrics over unpolished boom-bap beats. That being said, there’s some redundant moments and a couple weak hooks, but the strong tracks–”Don’t Take It Personal” (with Shug), “Street Legends” (featuring a tight verse from Chan), “Whatever I Wana Do,” “Inner City Youth”–tend to cover up some of the deficiencies of the album as a whole. Check out these two tracks:

KRS-One & Buckshot- Survival Skills (Duck Down)
I’ll refer you to Chris Faraone’s coverage (and subsequent outrage at the unresponsive lot of y’all) on this one.

Jay Are (J Rawls and John Robinson)- The 1960’s Jazz Revolution Again (Polar Entertainment)
UGHH says this week, Amazon says next week, but whenever this thing drops it should be one to check for. J Rawls (Lone Catalysts, 3582) and John Robinson team up for this album dedicated to–big surprise–60s jazz music. This shit is nothing new in terms of concept, and its unfortunately one that people try too many times with high hopes of “blurring the lines” between the genres and ending with a lot of bored listeners. Haven’t heard anything but the cut below from this project, but the credentials are there for something special. Anybody who’s heard more about this disc (Japan 0nly until now), hit us up.
LISTEN: Jay ARE (J Rawls & John Robinson)- It’s Jay ARE

Fat Joe- J.O.S.E. 2 (Terror Squad/EMI)
The wait is over. Can you feel his hunger? Literally.

Chali 2na- Fish Outta Water (Decon Inc.)
Yes, that’s the real cover. Looks like what Thriller’s MJ would have looked like if he turned into a fish instead of a wolf. Chali 2na was a solid team player in J5, but I can’t listen to him on his own. In large doses, he sucks horribly.

Apathy- Wanna Snuggle? (Demigodz Entertainment)
Haven’t heard anything from this besides the song Trees posted a few days ago. Thoughts?

On&On is psyched for that Chali 2na joint!
Chali 2na? To be honest I watched the Lock Shit Down vid and I was more entertained with the video than I was impressed with the music. Talib’s verse did nothing for me, although the song itself stuck. Maybe it’s because I haven’t heard the whole album that i can’t judge it, but that one song dropped my hopes for the album a little.
Wussup with cheezy review of the Singapore Kane album. Even the way it starts off is questionable. Who cares what the reviewer thinks of rapper’s names. There are so many entertainment names that suck but to start a review off with negativity is not a good look. I’ve listened to this dude and he actually has things to say other than gun clap and bling rap. Would this reviewer start off a review like this about Saigon? Just putting out a point. But I feel the best way to review an album is to go by each song. This guys sounds like he just skimmed and stopped at whatever track he thought sounded good. Bad review. I say go listen to it again. It get’s my vote as 1 of the best underground albums of late to come out. Only thing this dude said that made sense was that he could rap and pointing out only a couple of the good songs (but there’s more than them he listed). Have someone else at this site do a review because he is one of the reasons why people don’t check for real hip hop with reviews like that.
Thanks to “tha1″ for pointing out that I did my job–it’s not a review, all i wanted to do was point out a few good tracks and let listeners hear and decide for themselves. Do you know what his name means? Just wondering. Enlighten us.
