Audio: BoyCott Blues- Back Stroke

Posted on October 2, 2009 by Martín Caballero

BoyCott Blues should have caught the screening of Michael Moore’s new movie in Harvard Square on Wednesday night. Not because he’s an frothing-at-the-mouth “revolutionary” a la Immortal Technique, nor because he’s as politically unaware as Lupe Fiasco. But because he could probably filter the good parts of Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story into a more potent, clear-eyed assessment of our current position as a nation (bent over and leaned on, in case you didn’t know) than the frumpy documentarian. He does something similar on “Back Stroke,” a cut from his recently released and JTTS-approved (click the fucking banner NOW) disc Irony. I can think of at least a dozen rappers who wouldn’t even know the meaning of the word, but not BoyCott; he cooly revises our collective acceptance of a fucked-up status quo with a bleak sense of humor and plain honesty. The sparse, bottom-ended production from Shant Koutoijian and DJ cuts from Insight provide the bittersweet flavor to back BoyCott’s ruminations on d’evils–self-imposed or otherwise forced on us–that Moore would point out as symptoms of the larger disease. He may be right on that point, but I’d rather listen to BoyCott tell it.
