Everything You Need To Know About Shepard Fairey’s Boston Arrest (So Far)

As I’m sure you blog-happy art-house contrarians know by now, Shepard Fairey was arrested last night on the way into his opening night gala at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. The show – “Supply and Demand” – was Fairey’s first major museum endeavor, and was a big deal for this city, which, despite having a thriving art scene in some regards, isn’t exactly Brooklyn or Paris, if you know what I’m spraying.
Anyway – I was at the event (review of that coming soon on ThePhoenix.com), but since a lot of people around the country are paying attention to this matter, I thought it might be useful to provide some context. Basically – Boston Mayor Tom Menino essentially extorted the police union in this past week’s salary negotiations, and this was payback. Last Monday, Fairey (with permission, I presume) bombed City Hall and had his pic taken with Menino.

When this first happened last night, just about everybody at the ICA (including me) thought it was a publicity stunt. But after calling a few sources and laying out all these pieces, I assure you that it’s as real as scabies.
