Top 8 Blog Rap Superstars of 2008

Posted on December 30, 2008 by Sleezy Trees

You’ve seen them in your RSS readers all year long. You’ve heard them on Last.fm, MySpace, imeem, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. Some owe their entire careers solely to the “blogosphere”.  Yes, without the blogs and the right internet marketing schemes playing A&R behind their trendy tech-savvy rear-ends they would more than likely still be lurking message boards and sending “please listen to my demo” .mp3 emails into KOCH records. They got this shit mastered. Take a cue.

8. Emilio Rojas : Mentioned 160 times in my RSS Reader in 2008

Emilio has come along way in 2008, running the usual spots: Nah Right, 2DopeBoyz, OnSmash.. etc. He even was mentioned on HipHopDX’s “DX NEXT” list. This Rochester / Brookyln NY native is working with one of my favorite producers in the game right now.. Illmind. Big things are in the cards for this dude. Peep his MySpace here.

7. Curren$y : Mentioned 244 times in my RSS Reader in 2008

New Orleans own.. Curren$y! Lil’ Wayne affiliations aside, the dude has had a busy 2008. Dropping the “Fin..” digital only mix cd, and preparing for a new label deal. He was also on the cover of the XXL (pictured here), and has made several “next-up” lists. I never listened to one track from him until today. And.. well.. I think I’m getting old. Judge for yourself:

6.  Asher Roth : Mentioned 257 times in my RSS Reader in 2008

Essentially I guess what I would be if I could rap and was slightly more of a pretty boy.. Ok, a lot more of a pretty boy. I also draw inspirations from Dave Matthews Band and Dire Straights, so I guess this kid can’t be all bad? Can he? Asher Roth also landed on that XXL cover, and well.. hip hop is pretty much dead anyway right?

Roth grew up in the suburbs of Pennsylvania, his hobbies included surfing the internet and attending keg parties. He’s now signed to a major label.

This is what you need to do in 2008 to get a deal. Rap over the Reading Rainbow beat:

5. 6th Sense : Mentioned 269 times in my RSS Reader in 2008

Ahh.. my boy 6th. This dude has talent coming out his anal cavity (no homo). He has relentlessly been filling my ipod with gems for the past few years (no homo), but for some reason 2008 seems to have been the year that 6th cracked the surface of this rap shit and started getting noticed.

A friend of this website, we wish 6th the best in 2K9..

4. B.O.B. : Mentioned 365 times in my RSS Reader in 2008

Ahhh.. big B.O.B. — in 2009 B.O.B. will be a millionaire. How do I know this? Because this man’s blog / internet promo game is THE TIGHTEST on the webs. Rarely does a day go by when I don’t see a mention of B.O.B. in my inbox, and 95% of the time it’s great shit. In my opinion, his crowning achievement in 2008 was this autotune video. Lulz. He’s also on that XXL cover shit.

We also profiled B.O.B. earlier this year in this post here and this post here

3. Donny Goines : Mentioned 372 times in my RSS Reader in 2008

Mr. Goines moved units in 2008.. and by units of course I’m referring to the digital unit of measurement known as a kilobyte. His information was transmitted via the worldwide telecommunication infrastructure in great abundance. Chances are, your bandwidth has been molested by some Donny Goines transmissions. What I’m trying to say is, he got mad downloads yo!

All kidding aside, Donny Goines is a very real dude, and a talented artist. We’re fans over here @ JumpTheTurnstyle.. keep it up Donny.

And just so Faraone can’t hate:

2. Charles Hamilton : Mentioned 589 times in my RSS Reader in 2008

Something about Soulja Boy beef and Sonic The Hedgehog. I really don’t know much about this dude except he’s from Harlem, he’s working with Pharrell and he’s probably a lot cooler than I am.

1. Mickey Factz : Mentioned 665 times in my RSS Reader In 2008

The blogs lov.. ::cough :: excuse me…

teh blogzorz 143 Mickey Factz.

To put it more bluntly, Mickey Factz will be a legend to your kids. That’s what it’s really looking like right now.

Mickey Factz is to 2008 what Wale was to 2007.

Mickey Factz will eventually control all aspects of the rap world. His plan is to go from blog rap to nerd rap to hipster rap and then on to the subgenre’s: emo-rap, space-rap, gangsta-rap, miami bass, new age electro, emo, folk-rap, math-rap, glam rap and finishing off his career with an a cover-version/ spoken word rendition of Catch-22 mashed with passages from the book of Genesis.

This muhfukka on that next lvl.

$pitta is the best of the bunch, the dude dropped a new mixtape for 7 months straight and he can’t get any love?!

If you didn’t hear a single track by the guy until Jan. 1st your ‘08 LOST.

  7. Sleezy Trees on January 1st, 2009 7:05 pm

Wale would probably be #1 if I did this list in 2007..

He’s more or less broken out of the underground at this point ..

  8. Woodro on January 1st, 2009 7:54 pm

    Is this a diss?

  9. k1ng on January 1st, 2009 9:44 pm

ma nigga drake needs to b up there because we all know drake will be way bigger then all those guys up there.

  10. danagram on January 2nd, 2009 2:29 am

yeah, if this list was for 2007, Wale and Sean Price would’ve figured prominently. But in 2008, those dudes actually got signed (Wale) and paid (Ruck) so they’re not in the minor league category of “Top 8 Blog Rappers” anymore…
i agree with whoever said Drake, although he’s also bigger than blog rapper at this point by far.
maybe The Knux belong on this list? personally not a big fan but they get that blog love. see also: Mikkey Halsted, Bishop Lamont, maybe…earlier in the year, especially.

  11. ENIG MUE on January 2nd, 2009 11:34 am

great list, I agree Drake should be there too.
Curren$y killed it this year, Spitta should be on everyones tongues [II] whenever he drops a proper album.
also, u were spotted on nahright…
