Audio: Classic Cam’ron
Posted on December 1, 2008 by Sleezy Trees

I think Cam’ron is exactly 10 years ahead of his time.
I never really felt dude when he was coming out, but re-listening to some of these joints nearly 10 years after their initial run on radio and mixtapes (yes tapes), in the late 90s I must admit; I’m feeling some of this shit.
Sure Cam’ron is responsible for some of the most flamboyantly quasi-homosexual moments in hip hop history, but you know what they say. Rap is like the WWE and even the WWE had it’s fair share of Golddust.
Let’s travel back to the 90s for a moment and listen in on some of Killa Cam’s shining moments from that era.

I was working at a Sam Goody in the Buckland Hills Mall when this song came out. For some reason it became the anthem of the store as we were closing. Every night @ 9:30, for like 2 months when the store would close, me and my homey Ca$hmoney used to throw on this joint, vaccuum and alphabetize the CD racks. We got this song in advance of it’s release, which was a big deal in the pre-internet piracy days, so we blasted the shit out of it. People used to gather at the closed gate of Sam Goody just to hear it’s unreleased goodness. To this day when I hear this song I’m transported back to the good ol’ days of record shops. Good times.

Cam’ron at his finest. Radio friendly joint for the ladies. Maybe his biggest hit of the era?

This was heavy in the streets in 1998. N.O.R.E. was pretty much that dude at the time and he assembled a fucking all-star team to lead off one on the greatest opening tracks in hip hop history.

Agreed except for that bit about “Horse & Carriage.” While it brings back sweet memories for you and yours I remember it as one of the select few tracks that marked hip-hop’s turn into shamelessly materialistic and obnoxious territories. I found it then – and still find it now – offensive for rappers to be talking down to concierges. That’s the definition of not keeping (sh)it real.
Vinnie Paz can spit the most homophobic shit and he’s a genius and Cam’ron can’t talk down to concierges??
These are definitely some classics, but a lot is hindsight methinks. In 10 years we’ll be reminiscing about how everyone loved Crank That Soulja Boy just outta nostalgia. 50 killed it on “How To Rob” with that one line imitating Mase (”Mason Betha…Come up off that watch now..I mean RIGHT NOW”)
Another one not to sleep on: “That’s Me” the opening track from his 2nd album SDE. This is some shit you play to test out your speakers.
