FuckSolar.com Publishes The Complete Boston Phoenix-Brownman Interview About Guru and Solar

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Guru&Brown-Belgium

A few months ago, in reporting on the strange life and death of hip-hop deity Guru, I was fortunate to get an incredibly candid interview with Brownman, the acclaimed Canadian trumpeter who toured with Jazzmatazz toward the end of Guru’s life and career.

Today, with permission from me and Brownman, FuckSolar.com posted the entire interview that fueled the latter part of my Phoenix cover story. There’s a lot to digest, but it’s a must-read for all Gang Starr fans.

Some time has passed since the initial hysteria surrounding Guru’s departure, but, to their credit, FuckSolar.com is still marching forward in its mission to “Document Solar’s Downfall. For Guru.” Last month they had a particularly entertaining post about how the so-called “super producer” tried to screw the foster care system.

Nobody’s invincible. No plan is fool-proof. We all must meet our Moment of Truth.

Rest In Peace Guru.

Sean Price Is On Twitter. Ruckle Up!

250

To be honest, I’m not sure what took so long. Ruck is no technophobe; in fact, he was probably the first MC I ever saw write a verse on his Sidekick before stepping in the booth – and that was four years ago. Perhaps he was surveying the landscape; or maybe he just thought this Twitter shit should would go away, and that he could laugh at everybody else when so much hysteria eroded. Nevertheless, I’m pleased to see that Sean Price (@SeanMandela) is a mere Twitter mortal like the rest of us. And no doubt his updates will be hilarious. From what I can tell, this leaves Homeboy Sandman as the last hip-hop Twitter hold-out. Let me know if you can think of others…

Wu-Tang Wednesday: Hell Razah back and sharper than ever

Hell_Razah-02

If you’re a regular JTTS reader, then you’re well aware of at least my admiration for Hell Razah. He’s one of the most powerful lyricists in hip-hop, and he doesn’t have a single bad album in his repertoire. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that his and 4th Disciple’s Freedom of Speech (just $9.99 on iTunes!!!) is one of the most tragically slept-on rap discs of all-time. With that said – and as I think is demonstrated here – I’ve some seriously high expectations for his upcoming Heaven Razah.

“The Town” Trailer Mashed-Up “Star Wars” Style

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

It’s kind of like the way Chamillionaire knew he made it after Wierd Al ran some satire on him. Ben Affleck’s Charlestown flick The Town is now officially larger-than-large, at least in the sense that nerds have taken an incredible amount of time to mash-up a Star Wars-version of the trailer.

Aside from that indication that The Town is Oscar-bound, this video boggles on the sheer merit of its execution. Maybe I recognize the uncanny parallels more than most – since I watched the original trailer (below) several dozen times in covering the film – but this is a serious feat. My prediction: The Star Wars mash-up will hit 1 million views by this time next week.
