And then proceeds to explain why he feels the way he does..

“It aint about being a bully neither. Its about trying to get rid of a stigma that has plagued Boston for a long time and made it hard for hip hop artists to get onto a national level. Because there is such a huge college population here, combined with the fact that so few venues are willing to work with street, or even more so Black artists, the only artists that have been exposed to the masses have been those of a softer nature, who in most cases were not really from the city. That is why there has always been so much resentment between “hood” acts and “backpacker” acts here. Its not really about the artists in particular, but more about the landscape, the racial history of the city, and the ability for true urban artists to get heard. Some artists who have been accepted by the college crowd have also been unfairly labeled and resented by the urban audience. Thats anther story….although still part of the bigger picture.
Now, in my eyes, and Im not just talking about Boston really I guess, because I include artists from Lawrence and other urban areas surrounding Boston…. Now you finally have had over the past decade really good artists that have made big strides in breaking that barrier. Credible artists that we wanted to get behind that we felt represented our culture of neighborhoods, no matter what the differences may be between them.
All the sudden this dude comes out with an album called Bostons Boy and misrepresenting. He never went through the proper channels paid any respect or dues, and as far as I can see knows zero about the culture except what he might have caught from Lil Wayne Drake and MTV the past few years in his dorm room….he just caught a little college buzz off an Asher Roth bite, and got some big money behind a brilliant marketing scheme aimed all towards iTunes buybacks, drunk college bitches and fraternties. Dont get me wrong, he has major crossover appeal…and thats fine. I dont begrudge him that. But he never should have titled his shit Bostons Boy, because now you are fucking with everyone elses business.
The thing thats fucked up is I can say this, because I have a real viable career that will extend past hip hop hopefully, if I keep doing what Im doing on the film side of things etc…so Im not HATING. But if some other people say it, it sounds like hating. I also legitimately had a billboard charting album with La Coka Nostra that did about the same as Sammys fictional numbers. Thats why I am speaking up as a white mc from Boston who loves hip hop. This dude Sam Adams actually thinks its all jealousy. This is just bigger than the individuals involved. Anyone who doesnt see that is missing the point. Sam Adams doesnt see it cause he has no idea about the history of how this whole thing evolved. I do. I have come up through the proper channels, and represented correctly to the best of my ability what my Boston was. A lot of people that I see in everywhere from the streets to AA meetings in South Boston to The Shattuck, to mcs, to fans at shows have reflected this to me. I have also had long discussions and disagreements with everyone from Edo and Jaysaun, to Twice Thou….disagreed a lot with Uno the Prophet a lot…but at least had real dialogue. Done songs and built relationships with everyone from Dre, to Mann Terror, Gwop Gang, Frankie Wainwright and on and on. Statik Selktah has done the same type of thing on a production level. Im saying as white artists in hip hop. These are the proper avenues to take and will be respected if you have skills. There is a reason this thing called credibility is important in hip hop, and it was so something like this couldnt happen. Where some rich white college kids with a scheme and a huge bankroll come in and jack the entire street culture and turn it into some bubble gum frat bullshit. But thats where we are now. And watching what this kid is saying in interviews it is extremely clear that he has no respect for HIP HOP as a culture. He is even saying he invented his own form of music….WHAT??? Are you tripping? Bad for the culture and artform, bad for your business, and bad for my business. Bad for Boston. Bad for hip hop. “
I <3 Slaine for taking a stand against this shit. And after reading this.. I feel I have to agree with 99% of what he is stating.. I couldn’t have said it better myself..
